Water Damage

Water and electricity: what to do

A burst pipe, an overflowing bath or a flood can send water into ceiling lights, sockets and even your consumer unit. Water conducts electricity, so wet wiring can cause electric shocks, short circuits and fires.

Keep clear of any wet electrical fittings. If you can reach the consumer unit safely, without standing in water, switch off the main switch. Don't touch switches or sockets with wet hands, and never walk into a flooded room where the electrics may still be live.

Our electricians isolate the affected circuits, inspect and dry out fittings, then carry out insulation resistance testing to confirm each circuit is safe before it's switched back on. Damaged accessories and cables are replaced, and we can give you a written report for your insurer.

Areas we cover: Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Trafford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside and Wigan, across Greater Manchester.

Water Damage: your questions answered

Is it safe to turn the power back on after a leak?

Not until the affected circuits have been inspected and tested. Water can sit inside fittings and cables, so a circuit that seems dry can still be dangerous.

Will my insurance cover electrical damage from a leak?

Many home insurance policies cover damage caused by escape of water, but every policy is different. We can give you a written report of what we found and the work we did to support your claim.

How soon can I use my lights again?

Circuits that test safe can often be switched back on the same day. Fittings that are badly soaked may need time to dry out or need replacing first.
