Ring Main Faults
Finding and fixing faults on your socket circuits
Most UK homes have their sockets wired on ring final circuits, usually called ring mains. The cable runs from the consumer unit, loops through each socket and returns to the board, so every socket is fed from two directions.
If the ring is broken by a loose terminal, a damaged cable or a badly made extension, the sockets may keep working while the remaining cable carries more current than it was designed for. That's why a broken ring can be dangerous even when nothing seems wrong.
We carry out a three-step ring continuity test, measuring each conductor end to end and then across the ring. It tells us whether the ring is complete and where any break or poor connection is, so we can repair it and retest.
Areas we cover: Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Trafford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside and Wigan, across Greater Manchester.
